Biblical Literacy ≠ Spiritual Maturity

Years ago, I dated someone who accused me of emotionally cheating—something that wasn’t true, no matter how I tried to explain. He was convinced I had deleted conversations that never even existed.

But instead of breaking up with me, he said:
“God told me to stay with you, like Hosea stayed with Gomer.”

(Quick context: In the Bible, Hosea was a prophet called by God to marry Gomer, a woman known for unfaithfulness, as a powerful picture of God's love and mercy toward Israel.)

Here’s the problem:
I wasn’t unfaithful. I wasn’t Gomer. That wasn’t my story to live out.
And that wasn’t love—it was spiritual manipulation.

Just because someone knows how to quote Scripture doesn’t mean they know how to walk it out in love, truth, or humility. Sometimes people weaponize the Bible to control, shame, or excuse their own insecurity.

That’s not leadership. That’s not God.

So here’s my word to you:
Guard your heart.
If he’s already twisting Scripture against you now, he’ll likely do it again later. And that is not the kind of “spiritual head of the household” you want leading your future family.

Don’t be impressed by biblical vocabulary—look for biblical character.
Humble. Patient. Truthful. Kind.
That’s Christlike leadership. And that’s worth waiting for.
