(A Father’s Day Reflection)
We got home from work today, and out of nowhere, Jonathan said,
“I hate Dad.”
Steve quietly walked out of the house.
It stung...of course it did.
We sat Jonathan down and explained that words matter. Even if he didn’t fully understand what he was saying, they carried weight. I’m sure he didn’t mean it the way it hit Steve… but it still hit.
That night, Steve had a choice.
He could’ve stayed hurt. He could’ve withdrawn.
Instead, he sat down, grabbed some cardboard, and started building;
a little car, crafted by hand, for Jonathan’s preschool “Drive-In Theater” day.
That’s fatherhood.
Not reacting to hurt, but responding with love.
Not waiting for perfect behavior to give good gifts.
Just choosing to build anyway.
It made me think:
How many times have we said or done things that hurt the heart of God…
And still, He keeps building.
He keeps showing up.
He keeps loving.
That’s the kind of Father we have.
He doesn't love us because we’ve earned it.
He doesn’t withdraw when we fail.
He comes close. He covers.
He creates beauty in spite of our mess.
So to all the dads who keep building love into their children’s lives, even when it hurts…
To every father reflecting God’s heart in quiet, faithful ways...
Happy Father’s Day.
Your love tells a bigger story.
